The Academy announced the Oscar nominees yesterday, and Netflix’s “Mank” led the way with 10 nominations.
There was a SIX-WAY tie for the second-most nominated . . . with “The Father”, “Judas and the Black Messiah”, “Minari”, “Nomadland”, “Sound of Metal”, and “The Trial of the Chicago 7”, which all got six nods.
All seven of the above were nominated for Best Picture, along with “Promising Young Woman”. (Which I haven’t seen . . . but it sounds promising. HI-YO!)
For what it’s worth, “Nomadland” and “Borat Subsequent Moviefilm” took home the top honors at the Golden Globes last month.
Golden Globe winner Andra Day got a Best Actress nomination for “The United States vs. Billie Holiday”.
She’s up against Viola Davis (“Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom”) . . . Vanessa Kirby (“Pieces of a Woman”) . . . Frances McDormand (“Nomadland”) . . . and Carey Mulligan (“Promising Young Woman”).
Golden Globe winner Chadwick Boseman got a (posthumous) Best Actor nomination for “Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom”.
He’s up against Riz Ahmed (“Sound of Metal”) . . . Anthony Hopkins (“The Father”) . . . Gary Oldman (“Mank”) . . . and Steven Yeun (“Minari”).
Some of the biggest “snubs” this year include: Spike Lee, who some think should’ve been nominated for directing “Da 5 Bloods”.
There’s also Tom Hanks. He FREAKED OUT the whole world by announcing he had COVID-19 last year at this time. Maybe he should’ve been nominated for that, but people are upset because he didn’t get a nod for “News of the World”.
Other “snubs” include: Regina King (“One Night in Miami . . .”), Amy Adams (“Hillbilly Elegy”), Jodie Foster (“The Mauritanian”), and Michelle Pfeiffer (“French Exit”). (You can find more snubs and surprises here, here, and here.)
“The 93rd Academy Awards” will air April 25th on ABC.
There’s no word on a host, but the last two years haven’t had one, so they might go that route again.
(You’ll find all the nominees here.)
