There will be a time when BANDS make a comeback on mainstream new music charts . . . but they’re definitely not IN right now.

Someone put together a chart called “The Slow Death of Bands,” and it documents the number of bands mentioned on the year-end Billboard Hot 100 charts, from the year 2000 up through last year.

In 2000, 29 bands made the chart . . . and in 2001, 32 did.  That was the peak.  From then until 2014, the fewest bands in a single year was 11 in 2008.

In the 10 years since, that would be a GOOD number.  2016 and 2017 both had 12 bands, but that was the max over that span.  In 2022, there were just THREE, and last year, there were just TWO.

One of them was the country band Old Dominion.  The other was Wham!, which made the chart again for “Last Christmas”.  Not exactly the most rockin’ acts.

(You can find the chart on Reddit’s “Data is Beautiful” sub.)
